Spirit of Corby Awards 2008 |
The public have decided who has the true Spirit of Corby, with the winners of the Corby Borough Council's Second Spirit of Corby Awards announced at a glittering awards dinner on Friday 1st February at the Hotel Elizabeth, Corby. 
The Spirit of Corby is a series of awards to people and organisations chosen by Corby people to represent The best of our vibrant local community, and are supported by Northants Police, Corby Excellence Cluster, Tresham Institute, the Environment Agency and Northamptonshire PCT. 
This year, in memory of the late Cllr Jimmy Kane CBE, Freeman of The Borough, and widely known as "Mr Corby", his family chose the Recipient of the Jimmy Kane Young Spirit of Corby Award. The public voted for the other winners, with around 1400 votes being cast, including 650 online.
Jimmy Kane Young Spirit of Corby Award - Danielle Robinson. Despite having to cope with a serious illness, Danielle is a person that is always looking to keep busy, better herself and make a difference to her local community. Apart from being a longstanding St John Ambulance volunteer, Danielle regularly helps out at her former primary school, the Corby Old Village Primary School and is looking at getting involved in more local projects to help the community.
Community Spirit Award (sponsored by Northamptonshire Police) - Ann-Marie Lawson. For her work for the young people of Corby, from obtaining funding to improve their quality of life, to running the Corby youth forum, to one-to-one work with more challenging young people.
Environmental Spirit Award (sponsored by the Environment Agency) - Friends of East Carlton Park. For their dedication to preservation, education and conservation of the park. They hold social events to fundraise for the park, and work hard regularly planting, steam cleaning, weeding, coppicing, and so on,helping to keep the park clean, safe and attractive for all to use.
Creative Spirit Award (sponsored by Corby Excellence Cluster) – Corby Zone. For their work to promote the arts in Corby. They mentor young people and have built up an artist' network in the town, encouraging and promoting artists to work together and helping them to direct their talents back into the Borough.
Educational Spirit Award (sponsored by Tresham Institute) – Julie Steventon. For her dedication to helping others people pursue their education whether as a Playgroup Worker, School Governor, Special Needs Assistant, Homework Club Tutor or mum! Julie has enrolled on a forthcoming course Teaching English as a Foreign Language course so she can help the newcomers to Corby as she's done for the last 30 years. For going above and beyond the call of duty in helping voluntary and community associations in Corby, whether through organising training, providing assistance or helping them to find funding.
