Drugs plane goes for £17k

The aircraft used by six men to fly drugs into the county has been sold for more than £17,000.

The microlight was put onto an auction website by police with a reserve list price of £12,000.

It's thought to be the first time a force has seized an aeroplane under the Misuse of Drugs Act and then managed to sell it.

Police say the money will go towards community projects and policing activities.

Six men, five from Corby, were jailed for a total of 37 years for trafficking class A drugs using the microlight.

The number of young people in Northamptonshire known as "Neets" has come down.

That's according to a county-wide body who offer advice and support for teenagers.

NEET stands for not in education, employment and training.

A survey puts that figure for 16 to 18 year olds in Northants at over one thousand.

Meanwhile an employment fair aimed at young people has been announced for later this month in Corby - it'll be held at the Cube on March the 21st.

Ross case reward doubled

Northamptonshire Police are now matching the £5,000 Crimestoppers reward for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for the death of David "Les" Ross.

Officers investigating the death of Mr Ross say they are pleased with the response received from the public since his death on Monday 17 December last year.

However, Detective Chief Inspector Martin Kinchin, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: "The number of people who attended Les Ross's funeral last week highlighted how popular he was, but also highlighted that only a fraction of people who knew him have so far spoken with us.

“This is key, because we know that Mr Ross was a private man who did not share the all the details of his life with many people, instead choosing to tell different people about different aspects of his life, his relationships and most importantly his concerns and fears.

"Setting up the Rubix Nightclub took a considerable amount of his time and finances. We know that Les had to borrow money to fulfil his ambition, but it is still unclear whether we have accounted for all his borrowing or whether or not this is related to the fatal assault he suffered.

“As well as the burglary to his home on Friday 14 December, we are aware that at various times in the past he had received threats and occasional damage to his vehicles.”

While detectives are investigating whether the assault might be linked to his involvement in the Rubix club, they are also looking to see if it is linked to his work as a doorman and taxi driver or is linked to a relationship.

DCI Kinchin added: "I hope that this reward will encourage people who know who is responsible for his death, or who know of any issues faced by Les, to come forward."

Following the case appearing on Crimewatch, officers believe they have traced and eliminated the Nissan Qashqai vehicle seen in CCTV footage at the scene.

But they still believe it is likely that somebody in The Jamb witnessed the attacker entering or leaving the Village Inn Express between 7.30am and 8.15am on Monday 17 December.

Men wanted over store thefts

Police have released images of people they want to speak to in connection with high value thefts from chain stores.

 Electronic goods were taken from stores in the county including the Corby branch of Currys.

In the last incident Apple Mac laptops worth £2,000 were stolen from the store last October.

 New data shows that Corby borough is still among areas with high numbers of people impacted by the effects of smoking.

 The London Health Observatory says mortality rates between 2008 and 2010 had Corby as ninth worst in England for deaths caused by smoking.

The cost of hospital admissions caused by smoking in the borough is also in the highest bracket, while they estimate that 16 per cent of women smoked during their pregnancy.

The Pen Green Centre has been described as "outstanding" in an inspection by Ofsted.

Inspectors visited the childrens' centre in mid-January; the report says parents refer to the centre as "their community".

It says in addition to Corby families the centre's services have also been used recently by 2,000 children from outside the area.

Ofsted said "outcomes for families were outstanding " and added Pen Green were focusing on improving health issues that were affecting Corby families including levels of obesity in young children.

A planning application has been submitted to turn the site of the former Hunting Lodge Hotel in Cottingham
into flats and houses.

It's come from the owners of the hotel and includes plans for a penthouse and mews cottages.

21 jobs were lost when the hotel closed in November of last year.

Crimewatch appeal over Ross case

The officer leading the investigation into the murder of Corby man David ‘Les’ Ross, has said he is pleased with the response following Thursday night’s appeal on BBC TV's Crimewatch.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Kinchin, said: “Some useful information was received as a result of last night’s show, which we will now be working through to establish if any significant detail has come to light.

"We are sure there are still people in Corby, or further afield, who may have vital information in helping us to establish who was responsible for the death of Mr Ross.

"We are grateful to everyone who has come forward so far. But if you haven’t and saw Mr Ross at any time on the day of his death, Monday 17 December, or the weekend before, then please come forward now.

"We are also keen for any information about the property that was stolen from Mr Ross's home on Friday 14 December, namely an iPhone, a BlackBerry PlayBook and a laptop computer.”
